A Universal Product Code (UPC) bar code can be found on almost all retail products. The UPC coding system was designed to uniquely identify a product and its manufacturer. There are three different types of UPC bar codes: UPC-A, UPC-E Version 0 and UPC-E Version 1.

UPC-A |
A fixed-length (12 digits), numeric-only bar code. The first (high order) digit is the number system character, the next ten digits are information characters, and the last (low order) digit is the Modulo 10 check digit. |
UPC-E Version 0 |
A six-digit variation of a UPC bar code used on retail products. The first digit represents the number system, the last digit indicates the check digit, and the second to last digit represents the type of compression used. The UPC-E symbol can be expanded into a UPC-A symbol by using the compression character. |
UPC-E Version 1 |
A six-digit variation of a UPC bar code used on catalogs and shelf labels. The first digit represents the number system, the last digit indicates the check digit, and the second to last digit represents the type of compression used. The UPC-E symbol can be expanded into a UPC-A symbol by using the compression character. |
